| The Highmark
Walk for a Healthy Community began as a way for non-profit organizations
to work synergistically to raise funds to support their community mission. In
addition, the event allows Highmark to streamline corporate donations and filter
the multiple requests to sponsor local walks each year.
The concept of pulling organizations together in one big walk
is a way for Highmark to underwrite the event and make a major impact in the
community.
The inaugural Walk for a Healthy Community took place in Pittsburgh, in 2003,
and raised more than $25,000 for eight nonprofit organizations. Additional walks
have since been added in Bethlehem, Erie, and Harrisburg. Through 2009, the events
have raised more than 2.7 million dollars for 130 nonprofit organizations across
the state.
